Jayne Bond or James Bond?

Senior Jayne Campbell gets a glimpse into the life of a spy during a camp this summer

Palos Verdes High School may have discovered its very own James Bond: senior Jayne Campbell.

She explored the lifestyle of what she would explain as similar to a James Bond movie, or in simpler terms, as a spy.

Campbell pursued this by taking part in the trials and tribulations of a spy this summer at a camp called The National Security and Counterintelligence Institute at Georgetown University.

Campbell described a spy to be “different from what you expect and the role they play in movies” and that the job of a spy “is dangerous and hard because you have to keep secrets from everyone, including [your] family.”

This is not the typical teen summer camp, but rather an adventure into the mysterious realm of a spy, which most have probably wondered about at some point.

The idea of being a spy always seemed a bit unrealistic to Campbell, but with inspiration from movies and the fact she just happened to scroll onto this camp when looking for just mundane things to do this summer led to her actually learn more about this job, a job that she always thought to be a bit unfeasible.

Campbell flew to the U.S capitol, Washington D.C, a place she describes as “a cool place and the heart of all things government” for this camp.

It took place on July 15 and lasted for about a week.

There, she learned the general undertones of not only what it means to be a spy, but also the bizarre things you do within this unusual job.

At this spy camp she experienced typical college lectures, although these were a bit more exciting in comparison to an ordinary lecture because she heard information from people who actually work in the spy business. Along with this, she was educated on how secret, classified codes work and even how to do them.To the naked eye, there appears to be no downfall to the audacious life of a spy.

However, Campbell learned about the less glamorous side of being a spy.

She learned that spies don’t really get a chance to have a normal family or social life due to all the secrets they have to keep.

“I probably will not be an actual spy. Although, with the help of this camp and obvious incentives that come from movies like James Bond, I would like to go after a job in the CIA or be involved in foreign affairs.”

If Campbell were a spy, she would do it for the good of people.“I would be a spy to make people safer without them even knowing it,” Campbell said.
