Generation Z, commonly known as Gen Z, started around Y2K and was the first generation to grow up surrounded by screens and other technology.
As such, this generation’s widespread use of hand phones and social media has created an unprecedented level of global connection.
“Social media has so many negatives and so many positives. [The internet] does allow Gen Z to be connected over a wide variety of time,” junior Naya Lesser said.
One of the results of this global connection is the ability for almost any person to connect with and find a like-minded group of people somewhere on the internet.
For better or worse, the internet allows everybody to find or create a platform to promote themselves and their ideas.
This level of comfort created by the web has led to many trusting their screens, allowing them to be influenced and controlled by the internet in ways that older generations were not.
“We’re absolutely more influenced by [the internet]. I think we might be more influenced by it just because we are trained less to recognize misinformation,” Lesser said.
Due to the influence the internet has over people there is an evident danger in its power. However, while there is danger in the existence of content with negative influence on the internet, other forms of media can brighten someone’s world, inspiring them and teaching them valuable lessons.
For example, anime has stepped into the limelight on the internet and these stories often contain strong messages that encourage and inspire people.
“[Animes] tell stories, and teach lessons. Chainsaw man taught me to live for myself and not just for others,” said junior Baker Moravek.
Additional evidence of social media’s real world power can be seen in revolutions across the globe, such as in Nepal where in response to a social media ban, Gen Z ended up taking to the streets where they overthrew their government.
Notably, the pirate flag from the anime “One Piece” was seen in multiple photos. The pirate flag represents anti-government ideals with an emphasis on freedom, so the symbol’s presence in a real rebellion further shows the reach of the internet’s influence and power.
Gen Z was fostered by the internet and social media, leading to the people belonging to the generation to have a notable amount of trust in the instrument.
The internet’s unique ability to foster a community for anyone has its flaws but its widespread influence has given Gen Z a unique value of free speech that could help bring change in the future.
