As the winter sports season gets underway, several teams have already made a strong impression across the Bay League and beyond. From basketball courts to soccer fields and even the ocean, athletes have shown success while also finding areas that still need improvement. With strong leadership, underclassmen stepping up, and competitive matchups shaping the season, these teams are setting high expectations as the season progresses.
Girls’ Basketball has had a very strong start to the season, giving them a good shot at CIF and the Bay League.
“We’ve really come together as a team and have been able to pull off a lot of close wins,” sophomore Jenna Lee said. Even with such success, there can always be work for improvement.
“Building up team chemistry is always something that can be worked on, and being able to move the ball is also crucial to a team’s success,” Lee said.
Boys’ Basketball has had its ups and downs throughout the season, and they’ve had to deal with tough teams like Bosco.
“Our team has stayed pretty decent with our record, we haven’t had many easy games as our competition has been tough to start the season off,” junior Luke Dalis said.
On the bright side, leadership seems to be very strong for them, despite having only two seniors on the team.
“Braeden Croke has been a big factor in terms of leadership on our team. He’s been a big voice in the locker room and always gives everyone a good laugh,” Dalis said.
Boys’ Soccer has had an incredible start to the season, beating Mira Costa 2-1, which has led them to be #3 in the country and #1 in California.
“As of now, we are having a good start, and we are looking to keep it consistent with the rest of the season,” senior Roko Albano said. Their biggest advantage is that they haven’t had one player doing all the work, but a wide margin of consistency from everyone.
“We haven’t had a big standout this season as everyone has been contributing to our team effort, and we have all been able to have a fast start each game,” Albano said.
Girls’ Soccer has also had a tremendous start to the season, also ranked #1 in California.
“We have had a great start towards the season, and it’s great that everyone shows up to practice and is trying to improve on little things,” senior Julia Yousif said.
“Currently, we are looking to work on are trying to start a game stronger than how it usually goes for us, because in the past we have started off slow, which has led other teams to dictate the pace of the game, so we are looking to turn it around,” Yousif said.
Girls’ Water Polo has had its ups and downs throughout the season, but has managed to stay first in the Bay League.
“We had a rough start to the season, but with a change in the coaching staff, we’ve definitely grown a lot over the year,” senior Sydney Wynn said. Wynn has a lot of confidence in her team, as last year they were Bay League champions and they came short in CIF.
The Surf team has had a very good start to the season, with many positives along the way.
“The season has gone very well for us so far and has been lots of fun. We are currently early in, and that’s a good sign,” junior Reese Danon said.
Whether it’s improving chemistry, tightening up defense, or starting games stronger, all athletes know that there are still improvements that can be made and a lot of work to put in this winter season.
