High expectations follow the Palos Verdes High School boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams as they enter the season. Both teams had strong seasons in years past and plan to go even further with this one. 

Last season, girls’ lacrosse was knocked out of the playoffs in the second round. This year they are taking that loss and having a new goal to make it to the championship. 

Senior Ainsley Basic stated,  “After the feeling from losing major games last year, we now know that we have to work hard for the goals in mind and we don’t want to have the same feelings as we had last year.” 

They have the drive and motivation to win the championship. Boys’ lacrosse last year went all the way to the finals but lost to longtime rival, Loyola. 

This year they are planning to win the championship. 

Both teams have strong athletes and believe that they will easily make it to the playoffs. 

The girls’ lacrosse team had many expectations going into the 2019 season. They had the main goal which was to beat rival Redondo every time they faced. In the season-opening tournament the team beat the three teams they faced including Redondo for the championship. They were placed at fourth in the nation at the start. 

The team had a rough patch against the top three teams in the Southern Section. They lost three hard-fought games to their season rivals; Foothill High School, Redondo Union High School, and Westlake High School. The three games were back to back and the team had a hard time pulling out the win. With those losses, they jumped from 4th in the nation to 14th to 54th.  

After the three-game losing streak, girls lacrosse crushed bay-league team, Mira Costa High School 21-5 and Peninsula High School 17-3. 

In there last game of the regular season the team played Culver City and won 22-0. They are now holding third place in Los Angeles. The team heads into play-offs against number 14 Culver City. 

Boys’ lacrosse is heading into season with championship in mind. They faced hard teams this season, especially to rival Loyola. 

“[Loyola is] always a tough competition and they beat us the last couple years,” senior Kyle McCann said. “The score is always close and they usually win by a couple of goals.” 

In the face-off between both teams (Loyola and Palos Verdes), PV Boys lacrosse pulled out the win with a score of 15-8. Ending the normal season the team finishes with a total of 16 wins and 2 losses. 

They won Bay league championship beating Mira costa 15-2. The team ends Bay league with a 5-0 record. PV boys’ lacrosse is holding a national ranking at 14 and ranked first in Los Angeles. 

Going into play-offs this week the team holds the number one slot and will be facing number 16, San Marcos. 

As the season wraps up both teams will be in the playoffs. They are top teams in the Los Angeles area and hoping to pull out a win.
