Across the globe, thrifting and reusing old clothes has seen a sudden surge in popularity.
From the many thrift shops across California, to the flea markets in London, second hand fashion has become a worldwide favorite, with many people across the world, of all ages finding a love for thrifting for clothes.
Second hand fashion means something different to many people.
For many, they may use it to find chic and one of a kind clothing, like senior Charlotte Gallien.
“Going to a thrift store there are so many hidden items and it’s fun to go cause you never know what you’re going to find, it’s like digging through a treasure chest,” Gallien said.
Thrifting has helped many people find their styles, and find clothes they really appreciate.
“I have a really vintage style and going thrifting is something that really helps me find those clothes,” said sophomore Paige Chapman (pictured below).
Thrifting and reusing old clothes is also a large help to our environment.
“If everyone focuses on reusing their clothes or donating to thrift stores or selling it…that’s one way of reducing all the issues that fast fashion contributes to our planet,” senior Sofia LeGallo said.
According to the THRIVE project, “second hand fashion reduces textile waste, lowers carbon footprint, and reduces land and waterway pollution.”
Lastly, thrifting is simply a fun hobby. The many engaging moments of new finds makes thrifting very rewarding and keeps the process fresh and different each time. The thrill of new clothes mixed with ambitious shoppers keeps them coming back for new styles and unique finds.
“When you find something that’s super cute and find something that still has tags, you get really excited,” Chapman said.
Finding basically brand new clothes for marked down prices is not only a huge score, it’s also affordable and budget friendly.
Going through all the racks and finding brand-new pieces, or vintage ones for an affordable price makes thrifting so entertaining.
Thrifting, being great for our environment, having affordable prices, and being a fun experience is the true reason why it is beginning to grow in popularity. From young teenagers to adults, thrifting is something that everyone has found joy in.
