Is Winter Break Too Short?

Winter break is a transition from school’s neverending tests, homework, and studying, to opening presents, being with family, and time for fun holiday traditions. However, do students think that winter break is too short? Many students are given an abundance of homework over the break as well as stressing over finals that are soon to come. At Palos Verdes High School, students are given 18 days off to take a break, but many times, homework students are given takes up many days of winter break. Personally, I feel that winter break is too short because students need a longer break from overwhelming tests and homework, be able to sleep in, and have time to go on long vacations. However, what do other students at PV High feel? Is winter break too short or just right?

Winter break allows students to travel with family and friends in more time. Sophomore Eliana Choi says “Winter break gives students opportunities to travel to distant places, but it goes by too quickly.” Freshman Whitney Roberts also agrees. “Winter break is too short because people need enough time to visit family. Since we had a shorter Thanksgiving break than the majority of the other school districts, we deserve a longer break,” she states.

In addition, this year, colleges including most UC colleges are given a full month of winter break. This allows students to study abroad and take time to relax from stressful finals they are given. However, although they may only have this extra long break every few years, it is beneficial to students to have more time off of school. Most students here at PV High prefer a longer winter break, but as unlikely as it is to happen, students are still grateful for a fun-filled holiday break that we are able to enjoy each year.
