Thanksgiving traditions

Thanksgiving is a very important holiday to celebrate. Family and friends gather and give thanks for the best parts of their lives. There are so many traditions that are done annually, bringing families closer together every year.

A great tradition that lots of families love to do is the wishbone. After feasting on a delicious turkey dinner, a special bone is held by two people on either end. They both pull in opposite directions, and whoever is left holding the bigger piece, makes a wish!

Football is a sport loved by many families and a common Thanksgiving tradition. Family and friends gather to play or to watch. Either way, it’s a great way for people to come together and do something entertaining and active before the giant dinner!

And of course, the most delicious meal of the year is on Thanksgiving. “My favorite food at Thanksgiving is the pumpkin pie.” says sophomore Margaret Reid. Some other tasty dishes include cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, stuffing, and turkey.

A special televised program is the annual Macy’s parade in New York City. People can watch floats, marching bands, and performances. Millions tune into their TVs to witness this big event every year. This has been a yearly event since 1924. The purpose is to present an amusing program for people on Thanksgiving day.

Another televised program that many young children enjoy watching is “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.” This is a comedic film, which teaches watchers the true meaning behind the holiday. It involves wonderful humor such as the kicking of a football, and the process of preparing a Thanksgiving dinner. This production has become an annual film to watch among many families.

Thanksgiving is extremely important to celebrate in memory of the history and being grateful for what we are so fortunate to have. Living in such a beautiful city, many students are thankful for the little things. “I’m thankful for reliable wifi, and of course my friends.” says junior Francesca Houlbrooke. Also, it is beneficial for young students to learn about the history of Thanksgiving, including pilgrims, giving thanks, and of course, the huge feast!
