Holiday Getaways

With December finally here Sea Kings are exhausted from long hours of studying. Luckily, winter break is almost here, giving students a chance to relax and make some holiday memories. If you are looking for a place to go, here are some dream destinations to think about for winter break.

Destination: Costa Rica

Temperature: 80°F-86°F

If you enjoy warmer climates and want to escape the nasty cold, Costa Rica is a great place to travel. Located in Central America, the country is mainly known for its volcanoes, such as the active Poas Volcano, and beautiful waterfalls, such as the Celeste River, famous for its beautiful sky blue water color. According to scientist, the volcanic minerals in the water caused the water to turn into a pretty turquoise color, but legends say the river was used to wash all the blue paint off of God’s brush after he was finished painting the sky. Costa Rica may look like just trees from afar, but its true beauty is within its forest, and is what makes Costa Rica so special.

Destination: Bora Bora

Temperature: 70F-82F

If you are a warm weather person, Bora Bora is the perfect destination for you. The tropical island is surrounded by transparent waters full of sea creatures, ideal for snorkeling and scuba diving. Huts are built on the waters of Bora Bora and connected together like the Tenochtitlan Empire. Most of Bora Bora is a luxury resort and several Hollywood stars, such as Justin Bieber and Kim Kardashian, have been spotted vacationing there. In addition to snorkeling and scuba diving, you can also go whale and dolphin watching, catch some waves, or go on submarine tours. Bora Bora is mainly known for its superb architecture and deluxe hotels. This, along with the island’s magnificent waters, makes Bora Bora a perfect place to relax.

Destination: Lake Tahoe

Temperature: 20F-50F

For all you snow bunnies out there, Lake Tahoe is the perfect winter destination. Lake Tahoe, a large lake known for its gorgeous geographic features, just happens to be a great spot for skiing. Not only can you go skiing, but you can also go hiking in Van Sickle Bi-State Park, created in remembrance of Henry Van Sickle, the man who helped fund for the construction of the Pony Express. You  can also go on a boat ride in Emerald Bay State Park, a Natural National Landmark. Lake Tahoe’s breath-taking landscape is what brings life to the lake. Everything in Lake Tahoe is courtesy of nature which makes Lake Tahoe a fantastic place to stay and enjoy nature’s beauty.

Destination: Barcelona

Temperature: 40F-60F

Barcelona, Spain is a colorful city full of historic and modern significance, making it a great place for anyone to travel. Unlike Lake Tahoe, Barcelona is a city with colorful buildings and exquisite architecture reflecting Spain’s past. Barcelona is a very cultural city chock full of historical sites and museums. History buffs should be sure to checkout the Montjuic Castle, a fortress used by the military in 1640, and art lovers should stop by Museu Nacional d’art de Catalunya to look at old Spanish art work. Families looking for a bit of family fun should visit Barcelona’s version of Disneyland, Tibidabo Amusement Park.  In addition to those things, sports fans can visit Camp Nou, Spain’s largest football stadium that can seat 99,354 people. Barcelona is a unique city full of historic beauty and modern marvels.

Barcelona, Costa Rica, Bora Bora, and Lake Tahoe are all unique in their own ways and make for great vacation spots. While it may be a little far fetched to hope to visit any of these places this winter break, remember, winter break happens only once a year and making the most out of whatever you do is the most important part. So enjoy your winter break, even if you don’t get to jet-set around the globe!
