The 90’s were all that

So many memorable things came out of the 90’s, scrunchies, Silly Putty, flavored Lip Smackers lip balm, Fresh Prince of Bel Air- sound familiar? These are some of the things we remember as a part of our childhoods. I remember sitting in front of the TV, admiring MTV’s music videos with NSYNC’s frosted tips.

Lately we’ve been seeing things like Polaroid cameras and Vinyl records coming back onto the scene but now the entire 90’s style is coming back in a big way. With stores like American Apparel, which focus on capturing the true 90’s style while also being able to integrate current looks, it’s easier than ever to bring back your favorite denim jeans or cropped t-shirt.

Nirvana was the start of the grunge era and was one of the most influential grunge bands of all time. With grunge came denim jackets, flannels, ripped jeans, and ripped band tanks. 90’s Movies such as Clueless, which was named “fashion movie of the year” by Vogue magazine, provide a very classy and posh model for teenagers everywhere. Although many thought these trends ended with the millennium, we can see certain looks coming back. One example is the popular new look of crop tops, high waisted denim, and flannels. Many of the styles you see coming back today are from the 90’s, and not just the grunge side. If you’ve been binge watching Friends recently, you will notice that Rachel’s and Monica’s style doesn’t look too different from ours today.

Some of our favorite 90’s fashion icons were women like, Winona Ryder, Rachel Green from the 90’s TV Show Friends, and Kate Moss. Each of these women represented a different style of the 90’s. Winona Ryder managed to effortlessly accomplish a grunge, goth, yet still feminine style throughout the 90’s. Rachel Green had a preppy look with a touch of denim and elegance, and with Kate Moss brought high fashion to everyday looks.

Our model, PVHS sophomore Fiona Kane, has some fantastic 90’s outfits that she was willing to share with us. Some of her signature pieces are her oversized denim jacket, her jelly sandals, and her striped turtleneck. A great way to find some of these key trends is trying your local Salvation Army, for inexpensive yet on point 90’s style. Fiona advises, “A million people can get the same shirt at Brandy Melville but if you go to Salvation Army you are going to find something that most likely no one at school is going to have”.  Some ways to complete your 90’s look are with things such as thick plaid, denim skirts, high-waisted anything, halter tops, skater skirts, muscle shirts, and chunky shoes (such as Doc’s). These are all great 90’s pieces that you can incorporate into your everyday look. Instead of wearing your classic flannel with leggings and uggs, try pairing it with ripped jeans and boots.

The 90’s really were “all that”, full of memories from our childhood like stick on earrings and Ferbies. Now is your chance to bring back all the styles you love.
