Chart Toppers of 2014

There were a lot of great songs in the year of 2014 but 10 stood out the most. First, we have the song “Blank Space” by Taylor Swift. It was a big hit because in her new album, 1989, she progressed from country to pop. This was a wise move for Swift because she gained more fans with the new style of pop. The song “Blank Space” had an amazing music video and had a high of almost 313 million views. It reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 causing Taylor to be the first woman in Hot 100’s 56- year history to make it to the top.

 

Next the song “2 On” by Tinashe featuring ScHoolboy Q topped the charts. It was her first top single on her debut album. This was was featured by ScHoolboy Q who made it big on his album “Oxymoron” which made his fans want to listen to “2 On”.

 

The new boy band 5 Seconds Of Summer, also known as 5SOS,  made a big splash with the song “She Looks So Perfect”. Many teen girls love the new boy band. The song sold over 70,000 copies and reached an even larger audience due to Ed Sheeran’s cover of the song.

 

When Iggy Azalea the new hot female rapper released the song “Fancy” featuring Charli XCX it  was a big hit, reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and holding its place for a few weeks. The music video as well as the song were based off of the movie clueless. The song reached over 423 million views on Youtube. The popularity of “Fancy” motivated Iggy and Charli XCX to release many more great songs.

 

The remix of “Flawless” by Beyonce featuring Nicki Minaj was very popular in 2014 due to Beyonce being “Queen B” and to Nicki being one of greatest female rappers. The original song itself was beyond amazing but adding Nicki and making a remix broke the scale. The song’s line “I woke up like this” is very popular and is used on merchandise such as t-shirts, phone cases, coffee mugs, etc.

 

A new Irish artist, Hozier, found fame in 2014 with his new hit song, “Take Me to Church”,  written in 2013 but popularized in 2014. Reaching number two on the Billboard Hot 100 in December 2014, it became his top 5 single. The song is about a man who is homosexual and has to hide his relationship from the community because the church does not condone homosexuality.

 

Ed Sheeran’s album X was nominated album of the year at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. His major hit was “Don’t”, just one of his many great songs. It became his first top 10 single and it also made top 10 in 8 other countries. It sold over 1,464,000 copies. The song was very personal to Sheeran and created a spectacle when released.

 

Sam Smiths song “Stay With Me”, recorded in 2013 but released in April 2014, reached number two on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and also reached top 10 status in over 12 countries worldwide. The song was nominated for the Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. The song has sold over 6 million copies and was one of the best-selling singles worldwide in 2014.

 

“All About That Bass” by Meghan Trainor lyrically calls-out recognition of inner beauty and self acceptance. This song earned two nominations at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. Meghan was very deservant of those nominations due to her influential impact on the self-conscious women and men. Over 6 million copies were sold and topped the charts of 58 countries. The song made number one on the Billboard Hot 100 holding its place for 8 weeks.

 

The new hit of 2014, Uptown Funk, by Mark Ronson featuring Bruno Mars, was successful topping the charts in several countries. This song holds the title of the all-time most played song in a single week in the UK. Uptown Funk streamed a record 2.49 million times in a single week. The song has 92 million views on it’s retro pop Youtube video and counting adding the fact itwas only released a month ago.
