Manhattan Beach Fun!

Manhattan Beach Fun!

As many people know, Manhattan has what seems like an unlimited amount of things to do, especially compared to P.V. So, the worst thing that could happen is to be in Manhattan beach and not know what to do first.  Let’s dive into some options!
The Roundhouse Aquarium has free admission, but donations are accepted. The aquarium is small and not very fancy—still kids love this place because they are able to watch many  different kinds fish and even touch certain ones, like the starfish and stingrays. Occasionally there are tours, but mostly the aquarium features a self guided tour, with employees that are able to answer any questions and share information about the types of fish kept there. There is also a little place where kids can sit down and read about sea creatures and do activities.
If looking at fish through a glass wall isn’t your thing, Manhattan has an attractive long pier that starts at the foot of Manhattan Beach Blvd in the heart of downtown. The structure itself is a landmark—attractive and historic—but from the little cafe at the end you have a nice view of town, the beach, and most notably, the sunset. The pier also serves as a popular place for fishing. I’d say that, if you’re a tourist and want to do as the locals, find a beach cruiser and take a ride along the Strand between Manhattan and Hermosa. The Strand is a sidewalk that runs along the sand and connects the beach towns of the South Bay. If a bike isn’t available, then take a walk. If there’s a place to stop, then relax and plop yourself down in the warm sand. I think riding/walking along the strand gives people a great feel of what living in Manhattan Beach is all about.
Here’s a practical tip (that may or may not be from personal experience): If you don’t want to look like a tourist, be aware that the walkway that is closer to the beach is for bikes and the walkway away from the beach is for walking. Do not walk along the bike strand or you’ll most likely get in people’s way and cause problems. Also, if you’re crossing the bike strand to get or from the sand… look both ways before you cross; you don’t want to be taken out by a Lance Armstrong wannabe!
On more of the recreational fun-to-do list, the Manhattan Beach 6-man Open is a Glorious weekend of Halloween and Mardi Gras like costumes combined into one while teams play against each other in volleyball. People wear insane costumes, play volleyball, create elaborate game rituals, and generally have a good time. One could possibly run into an actual professional or Olympic athlete mixed in with all the ridiculousness.  Be there or be bored!
Lastly, try a surf lesson with Campsurf. It’s fun for all ages. They provide the equipment – soft surfboards with leashes; and wetsuits if the water or air temperature  isn’t warm enough. Lessons begin on land, they will tell you what a surfer needs to know and what to be aware of when in the water. The instructors provide tips on how to learn to paddle, stand up and ride before you ever get wet. You can take an individual lesson, or you can learn with your friends or family. The lessons typically don’t start until after 10:00am because the instructors and all the locals surf El Porto in the morning and the parking lot can get pretty crowded. By 10:00am the wind usually picks up and the waves get pushed a little flatter and that’s better for beginners. The instructors are friendly and attentive surfers looking to have fun with the students and enjoying another summer day at the beach. Plus, there is a restaurant on the beach close to the camp, pancakes, eggs, bacon, bugers, burritos, fries etc.. tables and chairs on the sand. Bring plenty of quarters for the parking meter, it is one dollar an hour.
With summer just around the corner, many seakings will be hitting up Manhattan beach so whatever you do, don’t miss out!
