The First Taste of Summer

The+First+Taste+of+Summer

One of the best feelings as a student is the feeling of summer approaching just beyond the horizon. You can feel the air getting warmer and the days getting longer. One enjoyable way to start off this long awaited season is by attending the Palos Verdes Street Fair and Music Festival on June 7-9. This is by far the largest carnival in the South Bay, including exciting tribute bands, boutique vendors, and a 65 foot Ferris wheel!

Some of the most popular attractions at the PV Street Fair are the rides. No need to drive hours away to an amusement park when there are thrilling rides in your own backyard. These white-knuckle rides include Zipper, Orbiter, Kamikaze, Tornado, Tilt-A-Whirl and Century Wheel.  One of the favorites of the carnival is Super Shot, a huge, high-powered drop tower. Knowing how much juveniles love adrenaline-pumping rides, the fair pays a special homage to the teenagers of the community with its famous PV Teen Night on June 7th.  Teenagers can get special discounts that night and the carnival is open for an extra hour. However, the fair doesn’t open until the next day, Saturday June 8th.

On Saturday, the tents spring up and the wallets come out. However, this isn’t your normal shopping trip. At the PV Street Fair you can find anything from jewelry, to paintings, to clothing, to woodwork.  Beautiful handcrafted accessories can be found, along with original photography and paintings. Henna tattoos are also always a unique thing to have and can last for over a week. But the festivities don’t stop here.

This pleasure-packed weekend isn’t over until someone goes home with a ribbon. Every year the PV Street Fair hosts numerous cook-offs. You can enter your mom’s best chili or your dad’s famous grilled-cheese sandwich for a chance to win a ribbon and a prize. However, if cooking isn’t your thing, anyone with a cute pup can enter in the Palos Verdes Dog Show. You’ll have fun with your pooch and may even win a ribbon while you’re at it.

Although sponsored by local residents and businesses, the PV Street Fair gives as well as takes. The street fair raises awareness for small private business owners who sell unique items. Every year there is also a blood-donation truck present. This is a great way to get tons of happy volunteers to donate blood to people in need. Many animals in need of homes are also commonly brought to the street fair, a beneficial way to raise awareness and possibly end in a few adoptions.

The Palos Verdes Street Fair is one of the most awaited events of the year and it would be a shame to miss out on all the fun. Make sure you clear your calendars on June 7-9 to kick off your summer right in PV.rsz_pv_street_fair_1
